The Delta Story

Established in 2000 and based in Kroonstad, Delta Seed specializes in conventionally bred, NON-GMO and GMO maize hybrids that deliver consistent performance under heat, drought, and disease stress.

There is an old saying that says: “If you see it, go for it!”

We saw a huge gap in the seed industry that needed to be filled and decided to do so. We knew there were only a few ways of doing it. Our main technique is the unique genetics we use, giving the ultimate greater stability, higher yield and affordable prices effect to all farmers.

Delta Seed Background

Delta Seed Background

Founded in 2000 by the renowned plant breeder Dr. At du Toit, Delta Seed has established itself as a trusted name in the African seed industry. Dr. du Toit continued his pioneering breeding work until the age of 90, laying the foundation for the company’s legacy of innovation and excellence.

In 2022, ownership passed to George Barnard and Pieter Rademeyer, who continue to drive Delta Seed forward with a commitment to sustainable agriculture and cutting-edge plant breeding.

Research and Production

Delta Seed operates two research nurseries in Kroonstad and Ventersburg, with a modern seed processing plant in Kroonstad. From here, all orders and deliveries are coordinated, ensuring efficiency and reliability.

Our seed production operation spans across Limpopo, Lichtenburg, and Komatipoort.  Delta Seed is capable to meet the growing demand while maintaining strict quality standards.

Breeding Focus

Our research program is dedicated to developing maize hybrids that are:

  • Drought and heat tolerant
  • Tolerant to major leaf, stalk, and cob diseases
  • Stable and reliable under variable conditions
  • High milling quality (white hybrids)
  • Nutrient-rich - exceptionally dark yellow (for some hybrids) for feed and poultry

Delta’s breeding combines local germplasm, selected over more than 50 years for resilience, with elite U.S. genetic material, forming a strong backbone for future varieties.
